Abuja – The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) on Tuesday collaborated with Rotary Club of Gwarinpa, FCT, to sensitise tricycle drivers also known as “Keke NAPEP” on the need for road safety in residential areas.
Mr Kingsley Agomoh, Assistant Corps Marshal FRSC, who was represented by at the sensitisation workshop by Ms Joyce Alexander, said the measure became imperative to curb incessant road crashes in residential areas.
Agomoh said motorists often failed to obey traffic rules because they felt they were not on the highways.
“This is not true; in fact the rate of accidents in the residential areas is on the increase because people are not paying attention to road signs.
“This is to caution motorists telling them what is ahead and the need to slow down so as not to crash into people trying to use the road.
“ In residential, school and religious building areas, we need more signs stating speed limit, `Park/Children Playing’ and `No Overtaking’.
“We need to be more careful and drive slowly so as to control any unforeseen danger,’’ he said.
Agomoh said there was need to educate people on how best to make use of the roads by obeying traffic rules.
He added that handbills, inscription on placards were distributed to the participants.
Mr Bisi Adegoke, District Governor, Rotary International District 9125, Nigeria, said the club was partnering with FRSC to save lives since it was the mandate of the club globally.
Adegoke said the programme was part of the club’s century event to mark Rotary’s 100 years of existence and humanitarian activities worldwide.
He said the workshop became imperative in order to check reckless driving among the Keke NAPEP operators, especially in Gwarinpa.(NAN)
