LAGOS (SUNDIATA POST)- Badagry Unit Command of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Thursday sensitised drivers and other road users on danger of route violations on the newly constructed Agbara-Badagry Expressway.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of the sensitisation is: “Dangers of Route Violations along Lagos Seme Expressway”.
NAN also reports that the programme was sponsored by West African Gas Pipeline Company Ltd. (WAPCo) in conjunction with FRSC Badagry Command.
Speaking, Mr William Manga, the Unit Commander, FRSC, said the recent completion of the double lane from Agbara to Badagry represents a significant investment in road infrastructure.
“This is a testament to our government’s commitment to improving transportation in our region.
“This development promises to enhance connectivity, promote economic activities, and ease the
burden of traffic congestion.
“However, it has also brought to light a pressing concern that we must collectively tackle.
“Since the new road was opened, we have witnessed an unsettling increase in accidents resulting from reckless driving behaviours, particularly the dangerous practice of driving against traffic,” he said.
According to Manga, every crash
that occurs due to route violation is not just a statistic, but represents a family’s anguish, a community’s loss, and a disruption of the trust placed in our road systems.
“Each time someone ignores the right lane and braces the one-way roads, they not only jeopardise their own safety, but also the lives of innocent road users.”
He urged road users to recognise the essential role security agencies play in road safety.
“Compliance with traffic regulations is not merely a legal obligation; it is a moral duty that we owe to ourselves and to one another.
“When you choose to adhere to the designated routes, you actively contribute to the safety of our roads and our community.
“To reinforce this message, we are implementing a robust public enlightenment campaign focused on educating our drivers about the dire consequences of route violations.
“We will disseminate informational materials, and public enlightenment in Churches, Mosques and motor parks to raise awareness,” he said.
Also, Mr Henry Olufemi, the Divisional Traffic Officer (DTO), Badagry Police Station, urged road union chairmen to sensitise their members on dangers involved in route violations.
Alhaji Akeem Sanni, the Chairman, National Union of Road Transport Workers, Seme-Badagry branch, commended the command for organising the programme.
He assured the command that the union would go back to the parks and call members to order.
Mr Jude Tegbe, Lead External Relations Specialist, WAPCo, advised drivers to avoid one-way violation to safe lives.
Chief Sottin Adeoye, representative of Akran of Badagry, Aholu Menu Toyi 1, urged road union leaders to advise their members to be well behaved while driving.
NAN reports that members of RTEAN, NURTW, Kasolayo, private drivers, commercial motorcyclists and other road users attended the programme. (NAN)
