ONITSHA – The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) on Tuesday urged motorists to embrace defensive driving in order to avoid errors that could cause road accidents during the `ember` months.
FRSC Sector Commander in Anambra, Mr Sunday Ajayi, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Onitsha, Anambra after a stakeholders’ meeting.
The meeting was organised by the commission to enable stakeholders to work out ways to tackle the issue of traffic congestion and wrong parking on major roads in the state during the `ember` months.
“For the `ember` months, I want to draw attention to the fact that Onitsha is strategic to us because of the activities there and the strategic route as well. [eap_ad_1] “I would want to let people know that `ember` months is just like any other month of the year; the only difference is that people tend to do more business so as to make more money and enjoy their holiday during the yuletide.
“And because of this, there is a lot of indiscipline that comes with it; like we are talking now, if the road users will obey lane instruction, that you are not jumping lane; if road user will not over-load; if they will use their seat-belts; if they will not over-speed; if they will maintain their vehicles very well and will not drink alcohol while driving, there will be no problem.
“So, what we are saying is that we want people to begin to have that culture of safety; as a matter of fact, road safety is not a chance (accidental development); it is something that you have to consistently work for.“
Ajayi thanked the stakeholders for their support to the commission over the years, saying that their backing helped to safeguard the lives of Nigerians on the road.
He called for greater collaboration with other segments of the society and appealed to the public to always provide prompt information to men and officers of the corps to enable them to carry out their mandate of ensuring the safety of lives on the road. (NAN)
