Uyo – The Akwa Ibom Command of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) on Tuesday in Uyo advised Nigerians to develop the habit of cycling to keep fit.
The Sector Command, Mrs Cecilia Alao, who gave the advice in Uyo during the 2017 edition of National Bicycle Week, said that the command was setting the pace for better living through cycling.
She said that the exercise was part of the FRSC’s programme to encourage Nigerians to ride bicycles and stay healthy.
According to her, the annual event is to gradually de-congest Nigeria’s highways as well as reduce carbon monoxide emissions.
“The exercise is part of the corps programmes to encourage Nigerians to ride bicycles.
“The annual event is geared toward gradual decongestion of the highways, reduce the emission of carbon monoxide which causes the depletion of ozone layer and to keep fit with the heap of daily functions.
“We encourage Akwa Ibom residents to develop the habit of cycling because cycling has numerous advantages ranging from physical fitness to an unpolluted environment for safe habitation,” she said.
Alao said that the annual event was organised in the state in conjunction with the Cycling Federation of Nigeria, Akwa Ibom Chapter.
The sector commander said the command would begin enforcement of speed limiting devices in commercial vehicles as from Feb. 1.
She said the device would ensure that “drivers do not go above certain speed’’, adding that the exercise would also reduce crashes on the road.
