Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara was prevented from presenting the 2025 budget to the Rivers State House of Assembly.
The budget presentation was scheduled for Wednesday before the Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule. This followed a recent Supreme Court ruling, which mandated the suspension of federal allocations to Rivers State until the budget is properly presented and approved.
However, upon arriving at the Assembly complex, Governor Fubara was denied entry, effectively stopping him from presenting the budget.
Reports suggest that the incident resulted from a lack of formal communication between the governor and the Assembly.
Speaking to journalists outside the complex, Governor Fubara stated that his attempt to present the budget was in the best interest of Rivers State residents. He mentioned that he had earlier written to the Speaker and tried reaching him by phone before deciding to appear in person.
Since December 13, 2023, lawmakers loyal to former Governor Nyesom Wike have been holding their legislative sessions at the Legislative Quarters in Port Harcourt, following the demolition of the Assembly Complex by the state government.
