LAGOS – A former boxing coach with the Lagos State Sports Council, Joseph Mensah, on Tuesday says the future of boxing lies in developing grassroots competitions in the country.
Mensah told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that if grassroots competitions were not regularly provided for the young ones, the future of boxing in the country was bleak.
He also expressed his displeasure in the non-inclusion of boxing among the sports to feature at the Nigeria Universities Association (NUGA) Games. [eap_ad_1] “If we must develop boxing, it has to be from these kids. Without these young ones, then there will be no future.
“It’s every sphere of life, the young shall grow. The future of Nigeria lies in these kids and what is so painful to me is that boxing is not in NUGA Games.
“Because that is where the history and the advancement of boxing is as at today. It’s a pity; boxing is not included in NUGA Games.
“Even in the secondary schools, boxing is a noble art of self defence. The future of boxing lies in school sports and NUGA Games,” he said.
Mensah, however, said that the country had abundant talents that could do the country proud at international competitions if they were adequately harnessed and invested upon. (NAN)
