Berlin – The German food-sector group has advised people who consume multiple dietary supplements, such as multi-vitamins and magnesium tablets, to read the labels to avoid taking more than the recommended doses.
The group, German Federation for Food Law and Food Science, whose membership includes some 90 associations representing agriculture and the food industry, issued the advice in Berlin on Tuesday.
It said that occasionally exceeding recommended doses was normally no problem but added: “Doing so regularly, however, could be very dangerous.
“People who are uncertain about what is safe should consult a doctor, pharmacist or dietician.’’[pro_ad_display_adzone id=”70560″]
The group pointed out that dietary supplements were not medications and could not replace balanced meals.
It said supplements were useful for people unable to consume enough of an essential vitamin or mineral via food as well as pregnant women, vegans and vegetarians. (dpa/NAN)
