PORT HARCOURT – An educationist, Mrs Esther Wesley, on Wednesday identified girl-child education as a necessary tool for building a viable economy capable of creating massive wealth.
Wesley, a retired Secondary School Principal, made the assertion in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Port Harcourt.
“Education for one woman is education for all because as a mother, she has dependants like her children who get direct impact from her.
“Days are gone when women were just seen as never-do-well people, women now should be encouraged to get academic empowerment for job creation,’’ Wesley said.
The educationist said girl-child education was fundamental for national development.
Wesley called on parents to champion the course of girl-child education for the benefit of their homes.
According to her, a girl-child has a right to education, not early marriage which exposed her future to serious danger.
The educationist therefore, urged government at all levels to devise means of cushioning girl-child labour and abuse for a greater Nigeria.
She regretted the manner the society had treated the girl-child educationally, adding that it was time to put a stop to it. (NAN)
