Lafia – Gov.Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa State on Thursday presented the 2016 budget proposal of N77.9 billion to the state House of Assembly for consideration.
Presenting the appropriation bill tagged, “Budget of Pragmatism”, Al-Makura said the budget was aimed at consolidating his administration’s achievements in fighting poverty, unemployment and to ensure even development in the state.
“On behalf of the people of Nasarawa State, I Tanko Al-Makura, want to present the 2016 budget bill tagged the budget of pragmatism and aimed at bringing the much needed dividend of democracy to the people of the state.
He said the recurrent expenditure stood at N43.3 billion, representing 55.6 per cent while the capital expenditure estimate was N34.5, representing 44.4 per cent of the budget.
“The education sector has N17.09 billion; works, housing and transport has N9.5 billion; health has N6.37 billion, among other sectors,’’ he said.
Al-Makura announced free education from primary to secondary school level for citizens of the state, including the physically challenged.
He also listed areas of focus to include the completion of all ongoing projects and the rural road network, especially bridges.
Others are employment generation, youth empowerment, aviation, infrastructure and market development.
The governor commended the lawmakers and people of the state for their cooperation and urged them not to relent in their efforts to promote peaceful co-existence.
Al-Makura called on the legislators to give the budget speedy passage, to enable the state government to execute people-oriented projects.
Responding, the Speaker of the assembly, Alhaji Ibrahim Balarabe, promised the speedy passage of the budget and their readiness to partner the executive to achieve development in the state.
Al-Makura in 2015 presented a budget of N107. 9 billion to the assembly and a supplementary N2.7 billion later in the year.(NAN)
