Lagos – Mrs Saidat Otulana, the Director, Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture (LSCAC), has called on Federal Government to revive cultural dances, debating and dramatic societies in schools’ curricula to promote Nigeria’s cultural heritage.
Otulana told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Wednesday that most schools had neglected these old extra curricula activities.
She said that the inclusion of cultural dances into schools’ curricula would expose students to various indigenous dances peculiar to each ethnic group.
She said this was one of the ways by which pupils and students could be groomed in their indigenous cultural practices and languages.
Otulana also said that schools should be encouraged to re-introduce debating societies into their curricula.
Through that, students would be introduced to drama, as well as take part in quiz and debate competitions in the three ethnic groups.

” We have very few schools doing this in Lagos State and I don’t think it is done in other states of the country.
” The revival of this practice will help to groom pupils and students in their mother-tongue while in school.
” I can remember those days in schools when we would always look forward to rehearsals and the grand presentation, where prizes would be awarded.
” This should be re-introduced in primary and secondary schools so that we can leave good legacies for our children,” Otulana said. (NAN)
