Minna – Gov. Abubakar Bello of Niger has called for the installation of functional fire fighting equipment in markets across the country to reduce losses to fire.

He made the call on Tuesday during an on-the-spot assessment of the inferno that ravaged the Abdulkadir Kure Ultra Modern Market in Minna.

Bello said that the state government would start the installation of industrial power generators in markets as a way of curtailing incessant fire outbreaks caused by electricity challenges.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Kure market fire incident, which affected 48 lock- up shops on Sunday, was attributed to the use of faulty generators in some of the shops.

The governor added that the installation of the industrial generator would end the use of individual generators in such markets.

He directed Alhaji Kabiru Musa, the Commissioner for Local Government, Community Development and Chieftaincy Affairs, to recommend appropriate generating capacity for the proposed industrial generator.

Bello said that the state government would continue in its effort to improve and upgrade facilities in markets in the state.
