Yola – Gov. Mohammed Bindow of Adamawa has promised to pay teachers their outstanding salary arrears of four months very soon.
Bindow, who did not however specify a date, made the promise on Thursday in Girei while addressing staff of Government Secondary School, Girei, during a visit to the school.
He said that with the declaration of state of emergency on education by his administration, the issue of teachers’ welfare would receive priority.
“We have declared state of emergency on education and the welfare of teachers is very important for it to succeed.
“I want to assure all teachers in Adamawa that all their arrears will be paid very soon,” Bindow said.
Responding, the Principal of the school, Mr Mahmood Turaki, who conducted the governor round the school, described the visit as historic.
“Today is a great day in the history of this school and we are happy with the declaration of state of emergency on education which is a welcome development,” he said.
Turaki listed the problems affecting the 37-year-old school as lack of staff quarters, dilapidated structures and lack of functional school bus, among others.
