Gov Obiano presents scorecard at 100 days in office

AWKA –  Gov. Willie Obiano of Anambra State on Wednesday presented the scorecard of his 100 days in office and expressed the  determination to transform the state to an enviable height.

In his speech on the occasion in Awka, Obiano promised to increase workers’ salaries as soon as the internally generated revenue of the state improved.

In the area of security, Obiano said he was working to ensure that the state was safe for investors and  citizens, saying that a special task force had been set up to achieve the feat.

“A total of 177 kidnappers have been arrested out of which 97 are currently undergoing prosecution while their warehouses where they kept their victims have been destroyed.

“In the agriculture sector, we have started a revolution that will increase food sufficiency and create massive employment.

“In partnership with the Coscharis Group, we have commissioned the Coched Farms Project to produce 120,000 metric tons of rice per annum and generate 1000 jobs for our youths,” he said.

On road rehabilitation, the governor said that his administration had inaugurated the construction of 14 new roads of 167 kilometres across state.

He said that his administration also inaugurated the construction of three flyovers in Awka and one bridge that led to the oil fields in Aguleri.

In trade and commerce, Obiano said he had rolled out a 10-year industrial development plan and commenced the development of new markets in Ogbunike, Oba, Awka and Umunze.

“In oil and gas, we have commenced plans to ensure that Anambra is recognised as Nigeria’s 10th oil producing state,” he said.

He noted that the sector would attract a lot of oil and gas infrastructure, generate employment and make the state an aviation fuel designation for refilling planes when the cargo airport in Umuleri was completed.

The governor said that his administration reviewed the salaries of the staff of Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe and approved the payment of N10 million for the completion of the NUT House in Awka.

He said a number of successful free surgeries had been carried out in Umuleri General Hospital while a maternal and child health clinic was established in Nanka.

In the environment sector, the governor said that a campaign entitled `Operation Keep Anambra Clean’ and tree planting were launched to make the state the cleanest in Nigeria.

“In building a befitting capital city, we have launched the construction of three flyovers and a three Arms Zone in Awka.

“We have also set up the new Awka Capital Territory Development Board with a view to transforming Awka into a super-modern city that we all shall be proud of,” he said.

The governor appealed to all stakeholders to cooperate with the government to achieve the campaign promises.

In a lecture titled “Community and Consensus: My Hope for Anambra State,” a renowned novelist, Miss Chimamanda Adichie, urged the Igbo to renew the values of community and consensus.

“Let us retrieve and renew the values that once were ours; the values of conscience and integrity, of community and consensus.

“Let us disagree and agree to disagree but let us do so not as separate fractious groups fighting against each other constantly but as people who ultimately have the same goal of a better community for all,” she said.

Obiano of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) was sworn-in on March 17. (NAN)
