ABUJA – . Ibrahim Shema of Katsina State on Saturday inaugurated 151 housing units constructed by his administration at the cost of over N7.3 billion at Kafe District of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Inaugurating the project, comprising 71 units of four-bedroom duplexes, 28 units of four-bedrooms terrace and 52 units of two-bedroom flats, the governor said that the project was executed without external or internal borrowing.
“These houses are built solely with Katsina State money for the benefit of Katsina State indigenes living in Abuja so that they can have relief on high cost of accommodation in FCT.
“There are 151 houses built for Katsina indigenes in Abuja at subsidised rate.
“It comprises 71 units of four-bedroom duplexes, 28 units of four-bedroom terrace, and 52 units of two-bedroom flats at a total sum of N7,292,583,652.39.
“This contract is a home grown project because the contractors and the consultants are all indigenes of Katsina State.
“Katsina State Government, under my leadership, has constructed many houses for the people of Katsina State in Katsina and now in FCT.
“This is in fulfillment of my promise in 2007 that welfare of Katsina indigenes will always be the priority of my administration.”

Shema said that the houses would be sold to indigenes of Katsina at subsidised rates, adding that the objective was to reduce the housing deficit and to ameliorate the difficulties in accessing affordable accommodation in the FCT.
In his remarks, the Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Alhaji Musa Sada, who was the chairman of the occasion, commended the state government for its foresight in constructing the houses in Abuja, adding that “Katsina Estate is the biggest estate owned by any state government in FCT.
“This estate is a testimony on how nationalistic Katsina people are, as the government built this type of estate outside its domain for the people of the state.
“This is also a fulfillment of the dream of late President Umaru Yar’adua, who started the project while he was governor of the state.”
On his part, Mallam Abdul-Azeez Kaita, Commissioner for Works and Housing in the state, said that the Shema administration had constructed over 2,000 houses in the last eight years.
Kaita said that beneficiaries of the houses in Abuja would pay back within 15 years.
“Interested indigenes, who are civil servants, are to pay 25 per cent initial deposit and pay back the balance within 15 years .
“Indigenes, who are self-employed, will pay 25 per cent initial deposit and pay up within 1 year,” he said.
According to the commissioner, a unit of the houses in Abuja goes for N34 million, N24 million and N16 million for the four-bedroom duplex, four- bedroom terrace and two-bed room apartments, respectively.(NAN).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the occasion was attended by Katsina indigenes in the FCT, members of the state House of Assembly, local government chairmen and chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from the state. (NAN)
