SOKOTO – Gov. Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto State on Tuesday called on the people of the state to actively embrace all-year farming to fight poverty and unemployment.
Wamakko made the appeal while receiving the people of Wamakko, led by Alhaji Ahmed Kalambaina, Chairman of the local government, who paid him a congratulatory visit over the governor’s victory in the senatorial elections.
He said that poverty and unemployment would be a thing of the past if people engaged themselves in all year farming as assorted food crops would be produced for both local consumption and export.
He explained that already the state government had taken measures to ensure the provision of various farming inputs to farmers at government controlled rates.
He said that the measure was part of the programme taken to fight the menace of poverty.
Wamakko commended the people for massively voting for the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the general elections.
” I appeal to you all to assist us with fervent prayers for God guidance in ensuring good democratic governance, ” he said.
He said prayers among the people would enable leaders to be focussed in the discharge of their constitutional responsibilities.
He said the current and incoming administrations would continue to remain focused in meeting the desires of the public irrespective of political differences.
Earlier, Kalambaina had said the entire people of Wamakko would continue to pray for God’s intervention in the socio-economic and political activities of the nation.
He commended the current administration for creating various developmental policies in the areas of roads, water supply, agriculture, education and construction of various health institutions across the state.
He said that such projects had improved the lots of the people since the inception of Wamakko administration eight years ago.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that Wamakko also received elders of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Goronyo, led by Bello Autu.
He commended them for mobilising members of the party in the just concluded general elections.
” You have done a lot by shunning the failed politicians who came out to buy your votes,” he said.
He said that incoming administration would take measures to promote farming through the provision of modern inputs in Goronyo area.
Responding, Autu, a former Majority Leader of the state House of Assembly promised that the elders would continue to promote peace and development in the area.(NAN)
