Lagos – The International Tennis Federation (ITF) on Monday announced Sept. 22 as deadline for the registration in the 16th Governor’s Cup Lagos Tennis Championship.
The annual championship is scheduled to hold at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan.
A statement issued by Taiwo Adelu, Media Officer of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), said that the notice was contained on the ITF’s website.
Adelu said that players who had registered, but willing to withdraw from the tournament can do so before Sept. 27.
He said that the qualifying matches for Futures 5 (the first leg) would be played between Oct. 8 and Oct. 9.
The media officer said that the main draws for the singles and doubles events in men and women’s categories would be played between Oct. 10 and Oct. 14.
He said that prize for the competition has been increased to $100,000 from $ 80,000 in the previous editions.
Adelu said that the chairman of the LOC, Pius Akinyelure, had promised a hitch free tournament.
Meanwhile, the President of Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Rotimi Edu, said that the renovation of facilities to be used for the competition had been completed.
He said that the event was organised to celebrate the incumbent governor of Lagos State.
“This year’s edition will be second under Gov. Akinwumi Ambode,’’ he said.
Edu said that the championships had attracted over 400 players from more than 50 countries since it was started.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 17-year-old French lady; Tessah Andrianjaftrimo won the first leg of the 15th edition in the women caregory while Aldin Setkic of Bosnia won in the men’s category.
Dutchman Antal Van Der Duim and Conny Perrin of Switzerland won the men and women’s singles of the second leg respectively. (NAN)
