Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has stopped an early morning attempt by alleged police officers to take over the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) and steal sensitive election materials.
The takeover, reportedly ordered by the Inspector-General of Police, was thwarted when alert security officials informed the Governor. Fubara quickly arrived at the scene with a team of government officials, lawmakers, and other stakeholders.
Condemning the actions of the policemen, Governor Fubara criticized the IGP’s close ties with Abuja-based politicians. He stressed, “Local government elections are an internal state matter and should be carried out without interference.”
This incident occurred just one day before the local government elections, set for Saturday, October 5.
