Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has announced the reinstatement of fuel subsidies to support irrigation farmers in communities impacted by Boko Haram insurgency.
During a visit to Bama town on Friday, Governor Zulum revealed that petrol would now be sold to farmers at a subsidized rate of ₦600 per litre, significantly lower than the ₦1,000 to ₦1,200 price in Maiduguri. This measure is aimed at reducing farmers’ costs and revitalizing agricultural activities in the region.

In addition to the fuel subsidy, the governor distributed essential farming tools and supplies to over 5,000 farmers. These items included fertilizers, water pumps, sprayers, and pesticides. Furthermore, the state government has constructed over 100 tube wells for irrigation and approved the development of 250 more to boost farming productivity.
“This initiative addresses one of the major challenges faced by irrigation farmers here, which is the rising cost of fuel,” Zulum stated. “To alleviate this burden, the government will procure petroleum products and sell them to farmers at a subsidized rate. In Maiduguri, petrol costs about ₦1,200 per litre, but starting this season, irrigation farmers will purchase it for ₦600.”
The move builds on a similar intervention in Damasak last year, which reportedly enhanced food production and improved livelihoods. Governor Zulum’s efforts highlight the state’s commitment to supporting farming communities and strengthening food security in conflict-affected areas.
