Lagos – Four major upset were recorded on Thursday at the ongoing Governor’s Cup Tennis Lagos holding at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan.
Frenchman, Sadio Doumbia, seeded four, defeated the tournament’s number two, Pere Riba of Spain, 6-2, 6-2-0 before retiring in third set in a major upset to gain a semi-final berth.
An elated Doumbia told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the victory did not come easy against Riba. “I am happy that I won. It was not easy for me but somehow I outsmarted him during his service, which gave me an edge.
“My opponent had an ankle problem and could not continue the match’’.
In the female singles event in the semi-final, three upset were recorded. Ulrikke Eikeri, seeded six, from Norway defeated tournament’s number one, Sherazad Reix from France, who suffered an ankle twist.
The game ended in the first set because she was forced to retired with the score standing at 4-0 (rtd).
Tessah Andrianjafitrimo, who was seeded eight, from France defeated the tournament number three seed, Julia Terziyska from Bulgaria.

Terziyske retired from the game in the second set, 6-1, 4-1 (rtd) citing an ankle cramp.
The 2013 winner, Tadeja Majeric, beat tournament’s number two, Valeriya Strakhova, from Ukraine, 7-5, 6-4, 7-6 (2).
NAN reports that the match lasted for about three hours on the centre court.
The championship comprises futures 3 and 4, spanning two-weeks, from Dec. 5 to Dec. 19.
No fewer than 64 players are participating in the first leg of the competition. (NAN)
