ILORIN – The wife of Kwara governor, Mrs Omolewa Ahmed, has called for the participation of more women in government’s policy making process.
Ahmed made the call on Tuesday in Ilorin at a programme organised by the Women Committee of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Kwara chapter.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the programme was in commemoration of the International Women Day celebration.
The governor’s wife was represented by the wife of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Hajia Khadijat Gold.
She charged women not to be deterred in the face of sundry challenges, but remain committed to the socio-economic emancipation of the country.
Ahmed also restated the commitment of the government to the empowerment of women with a view to putting them in their rightful positions.
Mrs Omolara Folorunsho, a staff of the Michael Imodu Centre for Labour Studies, Ilorin, described bias against women in the country as one of the reasons for their inability to compete favourably with their male counterparts.

She made the call in a lecture entitled: “ Actualising Gender Equality in Nigeria: Issues and Challenges.’’
Folorunsho, however, lauded the government for giving considerable level of representation to women.
She called for the implementation of laws banning discrimination against women in the work environment and other spheres of human endeavour.
Earlier in her remarks, the Chairperson, Women Committee of the NLC, Kwara chapter, Mrs Asmau Apalando, called for measures to eradicate the existing gender gap and inequality in the society.
Apalando called for a paradigm shift from ills such as domestic violence and women trafficking. (NAN)
