ABUJA – Former Head of State, Gen Yakubu Gowon (rtd), on Monday lauded the African First Ladies Peace Mission (AFLPM) for championing peace across the continent.
Gowon said this when he and his wife, Victoria and former first lady, received the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, at his residence in Abuja.
The first lady led a delegation of women to felicitate with the former leader on his 80th birthday, which was marked on Sunday with a Church service in Abuja.
Gowon also commended Mrs Jonathan, who is also the President of AFLPM, for her leadership in carrying the message of peace support to crises countries across the continent.
“Every country needs peace and what you are doing through your mission is commendable and must be encouraged,’’ he said.
The former leader prayed for love and understanding between the two religions of Islam and Christianity.
He said peace would be achieved in the country when the two work in harmony.
Gowon prayed for the leadership of the country, adding, “to rule Nigeria is not a small thing.’’
“No matter what you do, you will be criticised.’’
“My job now is to pray to ensure that God will give our leadership the enablement to do the right thing and see them through.’’
Earlier, Mrs Jonathan on behalf of Nigerian women thanked God for Gowon’s remarkable life and that of his family.
Mrs Jonathan, who commended Gowon for his consistent prayers, stand on unity and love for the nation, described him as a unifying factor.
“Men like Gowon are rare; his godly and peaceful nature are virtues worth emulating,’’ the first lady said.
She urged the former head of state not to relent in his prayers for peace and unity of Nigeria.
The first lady also prayed that God will reward him for the good work for the nation and wished him many more good years.
The former first lady, Mrs victoria Gowon, thanked Mrs Jonathan for the visit and wished her and her entourage well.
Members of the delegation include wife of the Senate President, Mrs Helen Mark.
Others include wives of the Service Chiefs; Heads of security, members of the House of Representatives; Ministers, Heads of Parastatal agencies and the Managing Director, Prat Oil, Hajia Bola Shagaya. (NAN)
