Enugu – An Enugu-based pressure group, Eastern Consultative Assembly (ECA), has called for fiscal federalism in the country’s political structure, saying it would reduce attempts at secession from the country.
The group made the call in a statement signed by its Deputy Leader, Mrs Maria Okwor and the Publicity Secretary, Rev. Fr. John Odey, in Enugu on Tuesday.
According to the statement released at the end of the group’s 6th Assembly, the refusal to peacefully restructure Nigeria is the reason the demand for secession is growing louder and louder.
It commended Nigerians from every region, who openly stated the truth and supported restructuring of the country.
“Only an early return to true federalism anchored on regional autonomy can save Nigeria now. Those who have ears let them hear,’’ it said.
The group commended the new leadership of Ohaneze Ndigbo for standing on the side of the people, describing the development as “welcome breath of fresh air’’.
“This is the first time in over a decade that an Ohaneze leadership is standing on the side of the people by adopting the truth and truly identifying with the wishes of the masses,’’ it said.
