Lagos – Some group of women on Friday called for the return of President Goodluck Jonathan in order to sustain women empowerment and the 35 per cent affirmative action started by his administration.
This call is contained in a communiqué issued at the end of a one-day Town Hall Meeting of Women In Action, an NGO convened by Sen. Florenec Ita–Giwa in Lagos.
According to the communiqué, there is need to return Jonathan in the next election “so as to sustain what we have and to increase the elective positions.’’
It called on women to develop effective outreach strategies to increase their participation and ultimately boost their ability to be a significant voting bloc.
It urged women to build coalition and political alliances under the leadership of Women In Action and focus on opportunities for counseling, mentoring and grooming of young women for the future electoral processes.
Participants suggested that a non-governmental platform for sensitisation, education, awareness creation for women empowerment in politics should be developed.

Participants challenged women who had benefited from the 35 per cent affirmative action by the president to empower other women to occupy the same political space
They urged women to actively participate in politics and be agents of change.
The First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, was represented by Chief Olajumoke Akinjide, the Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory.
She said Jonathan’s administration had demonstrated strong faith and commitment to empowerment, elevation, emancipation and total transformation of women more than any other administration. (NAN)
