ZARIA – Hajiya Asma’u Abdullahi, the Deputy National President, National Association for the Blind, on Thursday urged local government councils in Kaduna State to provide free education for blind girls.
She made the plea at the disbursement of braille machines and foodstuff to members of Zaria Local Government chapter of the association in Zaria, Kaduna State.
Abdullahi said the assistance would cushion the hardship being experienced by blind girls, especially in acquiring education.
She said that the local councils have a responsibility to improve the well-being of citizens.
In his speech, Alhaji Lawal Balarabe, the Chairman, Zaria Local Government, commended the efforts of the association.
“I want to commend your efforts toward assisting yourselves. It is heartwarming to see you helping yourselves.
“Let me use this medium to also appreciate journalists for effective coverage of the association’s activities.
` I am happy that you have been covering the association’s activities adequately, signifying your sacrificial efforts as mouthpiece of the people,” he noted.
Malam Dalhatu Jibril, the Chairman, National Association for the Blind, Zaria Local Government chapter, lauded the efforts of the council chairman in improving the wellbeing of members.
The association, he said, had donated items worth more than N20,000 to its members with a view to bringing succour to them.
He said the items distributed were meant to aid the educational pursuits of members as well as to cushion the scourge of poverty among them.
The association also presented awards and gifts to journalists in appreciation of the effective coverage of the association’s activities. (NAN)
