Abuja (Sundiata Post) – Groups under various organizations have taken the lead to demonstrate that Plateau State could regain its name as the ‘Home Of Peace and tourism’.
The Groups in combinations of Government agencies and Non-governmental organizations took to the street on Saturday to clean up the major roads in what is termed “Waste Free Campaign”.
They said the campaign is targeted at making the State to become one of the cleanest in the country.
Participating groups lined up for the campaign include Tearfund Nigeria, Renew Our World Nigeria, TASTE Nigeria, ACET Nigeria and Ignite House.
Our correspondent learnt that Tearfund sponsored the campaign with support from other participating agencies.
Other notable bodies that learned their support to make the campaign worth emulating after the launch are Jos Green Center, NYSC, JayFm, TCNN and Plateau Environmental Protection and Sanitation Agency PEPSA.
Clean up started from a major roundabout in Jos and terminated at the popular Jos Main Market, newsmen observed.
Speaking during the flag-off, the Director General of the Plateau Environmental Protection and Sanitation Agency-PEPSA Mr. Samuel Dapiya said there is a need to increase the level of awareness for people to know that a clean Plateau is Possible.
“This exercise is organized by TEARFUND and Renew our World Nigeria, TASTE and in partnership with other agencies and PEPSA is one of the co-sponsors of the awareness program.
“All citizens should actively participate in the awareness of a waste-free Plateau”, he said.
Also speaking for Tearfund, Mr Promise Salau added that the essence of the event was to create an awareness about the waste problem in the State.
“We must tell the public that we are responsible for the waste we generate and to also let them know that continuous sanitation is non-negotiable”, he said.
On his part, a representative of TASTE, Mr. David Balka emphasized that all polythene bags and plastic bottles in the streets should be collected in an orderly manner and disposed of.
