Hadejia farmers laud early rain, urge prompt fertiliser distribution

Kafin-Hausa (Jigawa) – Some farmers in Kafin-Hausa Local Government Council of Jigawa on Wednesday expressed happiness over a heavy downpour recorded in the area.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the area recorded its first rainfall on Tuesday, which started at about 5:15 p.m. and lasted for about 40 minutes.

The rain brought succour to the residents who had experienced biting heat in the last few weeks in the area.

The rise in the temperature to about 40 degrees Celsius had also exposed the inhabitants to inclement weather condition, forcing them to sleep in the open.

NAN reports that farmers in the area had commenced clearing their farmlands in preparation for the planting season.

A cross section of the farmers who spoke to NAN expressed joy at the early arrival of the rain.

Adamu Ibrahim, a farmer, said he was optimistic of bumper harvest this season following the early arrival of the rain.

Malam Dauda Sale, another farmer, said that the rain had made life more comfortable for the residents.

“The rain has saved us from the heat, which made life unbearable in the past days,” Sale said.

Sale,therefore, called on the state government to commence distribution of fertilisers and other inputs to the farmers.

He noted that early distribution of the fertilisers would enhance availability of the commodity and encourage agricultural activity.

Hadejia and the adjourning communities are located within the Sahel region which is prone to desert encroachment.

The area normally records rainfall between May and October.

NAN also reports that agriculture employs more than 80 per cent of the population in the area.

Some of the crops cultivated include rice; wheat, maize, groundnut, sorghum, millet, vegetables, perishables, fisheries and livestock. (NAN)
