Lagos – A 40-year-old herbalist, Alayande Suara, who allegedly assaulted his father’s tenant, one Yemisi Olaolu, by beating her, was on Thursday charged before an Ikeja Senior Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.
Suara, a resident of No. 30, Celestial St., Isoto Village, a Lagos suburb, is facing a three-count charge of breach of peace, threatening violence and assault.
The Prosecutor, Sgt. Mathew Akhaluode, told the court that the accused committed the offences on May 22 at his residence.
Akhaluode said that the accused unlawfully assaulted Olaolu by beating her mercilessly and also threatening to stab her with a broken bottle.
He said the accused had told the complainant to move out of the house for no reason and when she refused, he beat her up.
Akhaluode said that the case was reported to the police and the accused was arrested.
He said the offences contravened Sections 56, 166 and 172 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 172 prescribes a three-year jail term for offenders.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Senior Magistrate, Mrs Y.R Pinheiro, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50,000, with two sureties in like sum.
She adjourned the case till June 20 for hearing. (NAN)
