Abuja – The House of Representatives on Tuesday constituted an ad hoc committee to look into the activities of the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the Electricity Distribution Companies in Nigeria (EDCN).[pro_ad_display_adzone id=”10″]
This followed a motion on the urgent need for NERC to protect Nigerians from unwholesome practices by EDCN, moved by Rep. Philip Shuaibu (Edo-APC).
The motion was unanimously adopted by the House during plenary, presided over by the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara.
Shuaibu argued that many complaints by electricity consumers about the unwholesome practices of the distribution companies which fell short of standard indicated that the companies were failing in the discharge of their duties.
The House urged NERC to immediately enforce the abolishment of fixed charges being collected from electricity consumers across the nation.
The House also called on NERC to direct the distribution companies to discontinue the practice of compulsory bulk metering of villages and communities in the rural areas and that consumers should have the right to choose to be part of bulk metering or not.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the issue was referred to the committee for further legislative action and report back to the House within three weeks. (NAN)
