Managua – The Nicaraguan Government said hundreds of Cuban refugees were stranded in Central America after Nicaraguan officials stopped them from passing through their country and sent them back to neighbouring Costa Rica.
It said on Monday in Managua that the Cuban migrants were allowed to travel onward from Costa Rica, in spite of not having proper travel documents.
Nicaragua accused Costa Rica of causing a humanitarian crisis on the border shared by the two Central American countries.
“Several countries in the region have noted an increase in recent weeks in the number of migrants from Cuba, who are fleeing in the hope of reaching the U.S. through a third country.
U.S. officials said the number of Cuban refugees that had crossed into the U.S. from Mexico so far this year, was five times higher than all of last year.

Meanwhile, many Cubans are concerned that soon it may be more difficult to obtain political asylum in the U.S. because the two countries have restored diplomatic relations after decades of having no official ties.
The two countries are moving gradually toward full nomalisation of relations. (dpa/NAN)
