Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has refuted claims that he is seeking an automatic ticket or preferential treatment from the party for the 2027 election.
Obi’s media aide, Ibrahim Umar, made this known while responding to remarks by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, who denied any plans by the Labour Party to automatically field Obi, Abia State Governor Alex Otti, or other 2023 candidates in the next election.
The clarification came after factional Labour Party spokesperson, Abayomi Arabambi, claimed that Obi would be the party’s candidate to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027. However, Ifoh dismissed this assertion, emphasizing that only the Julius Abure-led faction could make such decisions, not external sources.
Addressing the party’s stance on “no automatic ticket,” Umar stressed that Obi is not concerned about internal party politics. He stated, “Peter Obi is dedicated to democracy and the welfare of Nigerians. He is not asking for a free ticket or special privileges. Instead, he supports a fair competition where all candidates have an equal chance.”
Umar also urged supporters to disregard false narratives, emphasizing that Obi remains focused on promoting good governance, economic progress, and social justice.
