Nollywood star, Kate Henshaw, has expressed her distaste for the common cliché among aspiring actresses who enter the entertainment industry solely for fame and stardom.
Featured as the cover star of DTNow Magazine, Henshaw provided valuable advice to budding actors and actresses, emphasising that aspiring stars should not prioritise fame.
The renowned actress emphasised the need for aspiring Nollywood talents to focus on their passion for the craft and their dedication to continuous learning.
To reinforce her viewpoint, Henshaw recounted valuable advice she received from veteran actor Olu Jacobs, explaining how it had positively impacted her career.
Furthermore, Henshaw advised emerging actors and actresses in the Nollywood industry to exhibit humility, possess a willingness to learn, and draw inspiration from experienced individuals within the field.
In her own words, Henshaw expressed her disdain for those who enter the industry with the sole purpose of attaining fame, stating, “I detest such words. While it is possible to achieve stardom, how can it be sustained? The real work lies in ensuring longevity, maintaining one’s position in the industry. It frustrates me when newcomers display arrogance and disrespect towards those who came before them. I apologize for my bluntness. Failing to greet others and lacking a teachable spirit will lead to a short-lived career. It’s not a curse, but a consequence. Observing the continued relevance of those who paved the way before you is crucial. I don’t need to mention names; you can see for yourself. Enter the industry out of love for the craft and the desire to learn. Even I continue to learn every day.”
Henshaw vividly recalled the advice given to her by Olu Jacobs, urging her to remain open to learning and personal growth. She highlighted the significance of studying and adopting the practices prevalent in other film industries such as Hollywood and Bollywood. As an actress who has worked in theater, television, and film, she finds inspiration in observing the techniques employed by actors worldwide. One particular example she cited was Angela Bassett, a remarkable talent in her sixties who continues to captivate audiences. Henshaw emphasized the importance of recognizing accomplished individuals who have withstood the test of time in the industry. These individuals possess certain qualities that contribute to their ongoing success: diligence, professionalism, and a humble attitude.
They do not consider themselves entitled to special treatment, but rather approach their work with an eagerness to learn and improve.
