LAGOS – Sunday Nwamuda, the grassroots’ boxing coach of Sunny Clay Boxing Club, on Saturday said that his ambition was to produce young boxers that would represent the country at continental competitions.
Nwamuda told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that he was training boxers who are under the age of 17 at the National Stadium boxing gymnasium in Lagos. [eap_ad_1] He said that he was impressed by the commitment of the young boxers who turned out for training to develop their talents.
“I am working to improve the standard of boxing in the nation; my happiness is that the talents are there and they are gradually coming up.
“The number of young boxers that train here every Saturday morning is overwhelming and this attracts spectators who spend time to watch the display of these budding talents.
“We have our training here because the National stadium is a central place accessible to a large number of them who reside within the environment,’’ he said.
According to him, some of the parents of the boxers have been very supportive as they endeavour to bring their children to the training programme.
“This is what inspires me; that parents can sacrifice their time to bring their children to training. It is commendable and makes the boxers to be more committed,’’ he said.
He called on non-governmental organisations, corporate bodies and individuals to assist the development of the sport through sponsorship to enable them organise grassroots competitions.
Nwamuda said that such competitions would encourage the upcoming boxers. (NAN)
