LAGOS – Whitesand International School, Lekki, on Monday defeated Birrel Avenue High School, 18-10 in male basketball event to qualify for the semi-finals in the ongoing Lagos Secondary School Sports [pro_ad_display_adzone id=”10″]Festival, “Ibile Games.
The Whitesands team, using height advantage over their opponents gave them the edge to play better at its offensive play and challenge better for the ball in the defence.
Whitesands good ball handling and team work also made it to stand tall throughout the match giving Birrel no chance to play its kind of game.
Ebube Obi, Whitesands captain, told the News Agency of Nigeria ( NAN ) that the team was confident of reaching the finals and claiming the gold medal.
”We played well today, it was a combination of good teamwork and proper understanding of ourselves.
”If we continue like this we will beat any team that stands on our way to claiming the gold medal, at Whitesands we play for fun and for glory,” Obi said.
However, Whitesands needs to be wary of the defending champions, the University of Lagos International School, (ISL) Akoja, Lagos which whitewashed Ifako Comprehensive College, 45-10 to qualify for the semifinals.
ISL was undoubtedly the better side as its ball skills and the pace of how the team moved proved too hot for the boys from Ifako to contend with.
Coach Earnest Ijeomah, said if the ISL team said that his team was out to prove that was the best team from Lagos.
”We are here to prove that we are the best team in Lagos, we will rule just like we did in 2013 and in 2014,” Ijeomah said.
Meanwhile, Ilupeju Grammar School, Oshodi defeated Muslim College, Oworonshoki 25-23 in a close encounter to progress to the semifinal.
Bishop Howells Grammar School, Bariga beat Top field Model School, Ajegunle, 32-28 to also book its place in the semifinals of the boys basketball event.
In the girls category, Queens College, Yaba beat Logos Comprehensive College, Maryland 14-0 to book its spot in the semifinals while Wesley School, Yaba trounced Aunty Ayo Comprehensive high school, 31-0.
Christian Mission School ( CMS) Bariga, defeated Lagoon Private School, Lekki, 10-7 for a place in the semifinal while ISL (girls) beat Phidel College, Ipaja, 8-4 for a semifinal spot (NAN)
