ABUJA (Sundiata Post) April 2014: Hundreds of school girls were kidnapped. Patience Jonathan suspected foul play. She screamed and asked very hard questions in flawed English. Nigerians ignored the content of her suspicion and the questions she asked. Rather, she was scorned and mocked for her bad English. Thanks to CHANNELS TV & co, post-abduction analysis of the Chibok saga focused on ‘diaris God oooo’, rather on the abracadabra that happened. Few years after, abductions involving school girls reoccured again. Thanks again to ‘hanty Peshe’, Nigerians are now wiser.
2015: A certain man wrapped himself in saintly robes and presented himself for election. Beneath the robes were underwears stained with blood, dirt and grease. Voices that warned the electorate to look beyond the saintly robes and examine the stained underwears were again, scorned, mocked and slandered. Few years after, the certain man pulled up his saintly garments, revealing his badly-stained underwears. The angry electorate are now singing a new chorus: ‘Get your PVC. We want change.’
Last year, UNILEVER launched PEARS Baby competition. Lots of young mothers like Ese Abamba dressed up her lovely twinnies, canvassing for votes. Many ignored. A young lady went on the internet and lifted a beautiful baby photo. She doesn’t even know the baby. Thousands voted for her and her fake picture. She won the coveted price. Shortly afterwards, UNILEVER discovered the fraud and issued an apology.
Any many more incidents…
Facts suggest that we are a gullible lot. It’s so easy to deceive folks around here. All you need is to master the art of make-belief and then, watch your fan base soar. This usually happens in every society where asking questions is an anathema.
As we enter this Holy Week, may we all ask God to teach us how to focus on the substance and NOT the form. Don’t waste your time asking God to fix Nigeria. Instead, ask for the power to discern, to distinguish and focus on the substance, and ignore the form. That’s the only thing we need right now to push forward.
Happy Sunday!
