OWERRI – The Speaker of Imo State House of Assembly, Mr Benjamin Uwajumogu, has condemned the murder of a Commissioner in the Assembly’s Service Commission, Mr Tobias Onyekele.
Onyeleke was shot in Owerri on Sunday afternoon by unknown persons.
The condemnation is contained in a statement signed by the Senior Special Assistant on Media to the [pro_ad_display_adzone id=”10″]Speaker, Mr Emeka Ahaneku
Uwajumogu decried what he called “high level of violence and unwarranted assassination of his close associates and supporters.”
“It is highly disturbing and nauseating how our state, which had hitherto witnessed relative peace and tranquillity in recent times, would be made to contend with such despicable act of violence, especially now that the country is poised for the upcoming electoral contest.”
The speaker described the late commissioner as an “honest and dedicated gentleman, who dedicated his entire life to the service of God and humanity.”
He said the state chapter of All Progressives Congress (APC), Okigwe Senatorial zone and the entire state had lost a rare gem.
Uwajumogu said Onyekele’s contribution to the positive development of the state had had far-reaching effect in the lives of the people.
He called on the relevant security agencies operating in the state to ensure that perpetrators of the act are made to face the full weight of the law.
“We need a punitive measure which would serve as a deterrent to persons who might be nursing similar outrageous act of disrupting the existing public peace in the state,” he added. (NAN)
