By SundiataPOST, Abuja The Chairman of the Imo State Independent Electoral Commission, Mr Amaechi Nwoha, has pledged to conduct local government and Community Government Council elections in 2014.
Nwoha announced the plan in Owerri on Thursday during a courtesy visit to the Speaker of the Imo House of Assembly, Mr Benjamin Uwajumogu.
He said the election had become necessary to enthrone democratically elected leaders at the local government level.
The chairman solicited the support of the assembly in ensuring the successful conduct of the elections.
“The people of Imo deserve to have democratically elected leaders at the local government level,
“In view of this, we will be conducting two elections next year; the local government elections and the Community Government Council elections.
“The cooperation of the Imo House of Assembly is highly needed to enable us to achieve this constitutionally,” he said.
The chairman promised to ensure that the activities of the commission would be guided by the laws of the assembly.
Responding, Uwajumogu promised to lend the needed support to the commission.
“We are partners in progress, working toward the betterment of the people of Imo.
“We will continue to partner with you to ensure you carry out your duty for the benefit of the people,” he said.
