Abuja – The Outgone Zonal Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Zone 7, FCT, Mr Jonas Agwu, said on Friday that his major regret as Head of the Command was rampant impunity of road users.
Agwu, an Assistant Corps Marshall, stated this in Abuja at the official handing over ceremony to his successor, Mr Kingsley Agomoh.
He said the zone which is in charge of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Niger had to contend with the challenge of enforcement because of the caliber of residents and their penchant for disobeying road traffic rules.
Agwu, who had been deployed to Port-Harcourt zone, however, said that his tenure witnessed a growth in Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of the zone.
“One of the things we can look back and thank God for is the raising of the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of this zone.
“When I took over in August 2014, the zone was rated number eight out of 12 commands but by the end of 2015 we came second among the 12 commands.
“However, there are regrets. Zone 7 is the Headquarter Command and it is in charge of policing the Federal Capital Territory.
“Within 21 months, we have not succeeded to give the optimum in terms of enforcement in the FCT and Niger.
“Although we were able to raise enforcement but it was not up to the level that we have set our minds to do.
“This is one challenge the incoming Zonal Commander will have to contend with because this is the seat of government where impunity is the order of the day,’’ he said.
He stressed that projecting a safer road culture particularly in the FCT, would be a major challenge his successor would also face.
In addressing the challenge, Agwu said the new logistic and structure being put in place in terms of awareness and punitive measures, should be built upon.
He also called for a synergy between sister enforcement agencies such as the Military, the Police and the Vehicle Inspection Directorate of the FCT.
His successor, Agomoh, said that his new posting was a call to duty and he would put all measures in place to ensure a successful tenure.
He commended Agwu for laying a solid foundation which he promised to improve upon.
He solicited for the support and cooperation of the commanding officers on ground in order to have a successful tenure.
“This is an outstanding zone and I would want us to keep the flag flying. In spite of all the challenges the zone must remain on top.
“I am open to advice, contributions and feedback which we can work on for improvement.
Agomoh also said that welfare of members of staff would be given priority.
He said that the Command would not relent in enforcement of the statutory mandate of FRSC to make the roads safer for all. (NAN)
