Abuja- The National Sports Commission (NSC) said the numerous commitments the commission had in 2014 stopped the second edition of the National Youth Games (NYG) from holding.
The Director-General of the NSC, Gbenga Elegbeleye, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja that the country’s participation in many competitions in 2014 took a lot of resources from the commission.
He said that the NYG could not hold in 2014 because it was not in the commission’s budget, hence it could not be financed from the monthly subventions.
“ Last year we were at the Commonwealth Games and the Africa Youth Games with some other competitions which took a lot of resources from us and NYG was not in the budget.

“It is supposed to be financed from our monthly subventions, so, we earmarked the money for it from our subvention which is what we did in the first edition.
“But last year, because of our participation in so many games, we had to put it on hold.
“In the 2015, we don’t really have much things on our hands compared to last year, so we will hold it later in the year,’’ Elegbeleye said.
NAN recalls that the inaugural edition of the NYG held in December 2013 and it was said then that it would be an annual event, but it failed to hold in 2014.
In 2013, 32 states and 4,080 athletes participated in the Games meant for athletes under the age of 17 and at the end of the Games, 370 talents were discovered. (NAN)
