India airline crew member held for smuggling $508,000

New Delhi   –     A flight attendant and an accomplice have been arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle 508,000 dollars in foreign exchange out of India, officials said on Tuesday.

“The 25-year old employee of the Jet Airways was on a flight from New Delhi to Hong Kong when she was caught by officials from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence.

“Based on the investigations and inputs from law enforcement agencies, the airline will take further action,’’ the airline said in a statement.

According to NDTV broadcaster, the mostly in 100 dollar bills was wrapped in aluminum foil to escape detection by the airport scanners.

A man who allegedly drafted her into the money-laundering network was also arrested later.

“The scheme involved collecting money from bullion dealers in Delhi and getting airline workers to take the money abroad, which was then brought back to India in the form of gold,’’ the report said.

Jet Airways was caught up in another controversy on Wednesday when two of its pilots were involved in a scuffle on a flight from London to Mumbai.

Both pilots have been sacked as the country’s aviation regulator ordered a probe into the incident.
