New Delhi,. -. India is “disappointed” by China’s blocking of a bid in the UN Security Council to designate as a terrorist the chief of a Pakistan-based militant organisation that it holds responsible for a recent car bomb attack, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said on Thursday.
The Feb. 14 car bomb attack in India-controlled Kashmir killed 40 paramilitary troopers and almost brought India and Pakistan to the brink of war.
On Wednesday, IANS news agency reported that China, in a note to the UN Security Council, said it needed more time to examine the request to add Masood Azhar to the UN terror blacklist.
“Addition to the list would mean a global travel ban and freezing of his assets.
“This has prevented action by the international community to designate the leader of Jaish-e-Mohammed, a proscribed and active terrorist organisation which has claimed responsibility for the terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir on Feb. 14.
“We are disappointed by this outcome,” the Indian statement said
India said it would continue to pursue all available avenues to ensure that terrorist leaders involved in attacks on citizens were brought to justice.
China has blocked similar proposals against the JeM chief in the past.
“We will continue to pursue all available avenues to ensure that terrorist leaders who are involved in heinous attacks on our citizens are brought to justice,’’ the ministry said.
India had carried out an air strike on what it claimed was a JeM training camp in Pakistani territory following the February bomb attack saying Pakistan had failed to take action against the group.
