NEW DELHI – Indian Premier Narendra Modi on Sunday in New Delhi, promised that he would retrieve funds believed to have been taken out of the country to evade taxes.
In a statement, he said many Indians were suspected of stashing undeclared cash in foreign banks.
“Every penny of the Indian poor that has been illegally taken abroad should be retrieved, this is my commitment,’’ he said.
Modi said that although he did not know how much money was siphoned abroad, he vowed not spare any efforts at bringing back the funds.
The Supreme Court has criticized the government on the funds stashed abroad and directed a special investigation team to probe the matter.
The government has also submitted a list of more than 600 Indian foreign bank account holders to the court as part of a probe into untaxed funds hidden abroad. (dpa/NAN)
