The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is working on simplifying the voting process by reducing reliance on Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, announced during a meeting in Abuja that voters may soon use computer-generated slips instead of PVCs, thanks to the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS). He explained that this innovation aims to streamline voting, reduce costs, and address challenges like delays in PVC collection and voter card fraud.
Additionally, INEC is implementing other reforms to improve elections. These include updating the voters’ register, introducing early voting for journalists and essential workers, and exploring the possibility of allowing Nigerians abroad to vote. The commission is also focusing on increasing participation of women and young people in the electoral process.
These measures are part of INEC’s broader plan to enhance the reliability and inclusiveness of elections for all citizens.
