ILORIN – The Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, on Tuesday in Ilorin cancelled the Sallah homage he normally paid to the Governor of Kwara on the second day of Eid-el-fitr celebration.
The emir told newsmen that he took the decision in view of the numerous attacks that occurred before and during Sallah celebrations in some parts of the country.
The traditional ruler said that such actions were not only condemnable, but also uncharitable.
He noted that the period which was meant to mark the end of the glorious month of Ramadan was now being used to kill innocent people.
“We have decided to make this year’s Sallah celebration low-key to commiserate with the nation as well as the families of those who lost their loved ones in the disasters.
“We have also cancelled this year’s Sallah homage to the governor to further express our deep concern for the nation.
“Whatever happens in other states also concerns us as a people and community; we, therefore, pray Allah to restore peace in the country and foster unity among our people,’’ he said.
The emir, however, commended President Goodluck Jonathan for appointing Dr Abubakar Suleiman of llorin as the Minister of National Planning.
The traditional ruler said the President’s action showed the significance of the community to the growth and development the nation.
He warned youths in the country to resist any temptation that could make them succumb to being used as political thugs. (NAN)
