Ilorin – The Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NlTP) has commended Gov. AbdulFatah Ahmed of Kwara for the domestication of the Urban and Regional Planning Law of 1992.
Mr Raphael Olaifa, the Chairman, Caretaker Committee of Kwara branch of NlTP, via a statement in llorin on Tuesday, also commended the Speaker of House of Assembly, Dr Ali Ahmad, for the domestication of the law.
News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the state Assembly recently passed the Urban and Regional Planning Bill, which the governor has signed into law.
Olaifa, who applauded the governor for promptly signing the bill into law, said that the new law would fast-track the implementation of the proposed master-plan for cities and towns in the state.
He called for the urgent implementation of the new law to ensure efficient urban planning and development of cities and towns in the state.
NAN reports that the new law stipulates stiffer penalties for those who contravene its provisions, while Kwara State Town Planning and Development Authority has been unbundled.
The Authority is now replaced with Kwara State Physical Planning Authority and Kwara State Development Control Agency, in line with global best practices.
