Lagos- The Chairman of the Lagos Chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS), Mr Olayemi Shonubi, on Monday told government agencies to engage quantity surveyors in construction costing.
Shonubi gave the suggestion at a news conference heralding the Quantity Surveyors’ Week in Lagos.
He said that the essence was to help monitor and ensure that various funds being allocated to government’s capital projects were maximally ultilised.
According to him, a professional knows where it pinches because a quantity surveyor will manage and monitor the cost and expenditure aspects of projects.
“In Nigeria, the government has allocated huge funds to some particular capital projects for more than eight or 10 times, yet such projects have not been executed.
“The allocated money always goes into the pockets of some group of individuals who may end up executing the project half-way or may out-rightly not execute it at all.
“But if a quantity surveyor is involved to handle the costing of such projects, he will ensure that maximum value is derived from a project.
“This is because construction cost evaluation; expenditure management and rendering of cost advice are the major areas of job description of the quantity surveyors.”
Shonubi said that the main focus of the Quantity Surveyors’ Week was to educate the public and create more awareness about the role and importance of quantity surveyors
He said that many developers did not know about the profession.
According to him, if estate developers engage the quantity surveyor to maximally evaluate the cost of their constructions, the high cost of houses will reduce. (NAN)
