Effurun (Delta) – The Certified Institute of Auctioneers of Nigeria (CIAN) has appealed to the National Assembly to pass the Auctioneering Bill, to ensure professionalism in the industry.
The Registrar of CIAN, Mr Adeleke Hassan, made the appeal while speaking with newsmen on Monday in Warri.
Hassan said that the auctioneering industry had a window of opportunities that had not been adequately explored by the government.
According to him, the industry can provide legitimate jobs for the teeming unemployed, if well harnessed.
“Government needs to pay attention to auctioneering; it should develop and encourage auctioneers.
“It should ensure that the institution’s bill before the National Assembly is passed to entrench professionalism.
“The passage of the bill, among other things, will help to eradicate quackery.”
Hassan said the institute has international recognition with other auctioneering bodies of the world such as the National Auctioneers Association and the Certified Auctioneering Institute in the U.S.
He said the association, which started six years ago, now has five chapters and that only the Delta chapter had been inaugurated in the South-South region.
“We attend courses overseas and ensure that they are domesticated in Nigeria; that is why we brought auctioneering programme into the University of Ibadan.”
Hassan listed properties and benefits as some of the auctioneering types and urged people to take advantage of the institute to become certified auctioneers in the country. (NAN)
