Abuja – The Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers (NIESV) says more estate surveyors are needed in the profession in order to eradicate quacks from the system.
NIESV’s President, Mr James Omeru, said this at the 2015 induction of 350 Associate Members into the institution in Abuja on Thursday.
Omeru explained that the decision to induct a large number of new members was to ensure that professionals reclaimed the practice from the destructive activities of quacks.
“We are inducting this huge number of estate surveyors because there is a gap which is being taken over by quacks.
“Without compromising standards, we have continued to increase the number of inductees; it’s time for you to reclaim your profession.
“If you can attach yourself to a firm, do that. If you cannot, you can come together to practice, so that you can dominate and eliminate the quacks.”
Omeru, while congratulating the newly inducted associate members, also urged them to uphold the ethics and regulations of the profession all the times.
NIESV’s immediate past president, Mr Emeka Eleh, urged the new members to exhibit professionalism in all their dealings with landlords and tenants.
Eleh advised the inductees to give priority to the acquisition of specialist knowledge in their areas of practice in order to guarantee their competitive edge.
He gave the advice in a presentation entitled: “Professionalism as a Hallmark of an Estate Surveyor and Valuer. “

“I urge you to pay great attention to the need to acquire more knowledge and specialise in a distinct area of practice because that is the way the industry is going.
“As you proceed to obtain your stamp and seal from the Board, which will qualify you to practice, I urge you not to be in a hurry to immediately set up a one man shop.
“Teaming up with your colleagues to set up a practice as is done in the developed world, will create a firm with multiple competencies and also have a pool of funds to start well.
“The future is certainly bright for our profession and I urge you to prepare well as you enter it and remain professionally focused and knowledge-driven when you are in it, “ Eleh said.
NAN reports that the Estate Surveyors and Valuers Registration Board of Nigeria (ESVARBON) is the regulatory body responsible for the registration of qualified persons to practice the profession. (NAN)
