ABUJA – Nigeria and German officials are holding talks in Abuja on modalities for security cooperation in the fight against insurgency.A one-day discussion on the issue is holding under the political
consultations working group of the Nigeria-German Bi-national Commission (BNC).The Nigerian delegation is led by Dr Martin Uhomoihbi, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while the Dr Markus Ederer, Secretary of State, Foreign Affairs, is leading the German side.
Both parties are discussing further possibilities for cooperation in the police and armed forces sector.
The meeting will also consider intensifying cooperation in crisis and border management.
On the agenda of the the Bi-national commission meeting are regional security issues in Mali, Chad and Central African Republic.
The German government, which promotes inter-religious relations in its Foreign policy, also listed that as a key
issue for discussion.The 2015 general election is also on the agenda of the meeting.
In his opening remarks at the meeting, Uhomoihbi said Nigeria required the support of friends and international partners to make the 2015 general election a success.
He stressed that the commitment of Nigeria government to free, fair and credible elections has been demonstrated by the recent successes of INEC in Ekiti state.
“The elections in Ekiti a few weeks ago had shown the commitment and dedication of this country to ensure that elections are free, fair and credible,” he said.On Boko Haram, NAN recalls that on Tuesday the UN office in West Africa blamed the terrorist group with links to Al Qaeda for no fewer than 18 attacks in the past two weeks.
Last month, the German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier expressed strong support for Nigeria in the fight against insurgency.
Germany had offered to set up projects to support the families and communities affected by the April 14 kidnap of school girls in Chibok, Borno. (NAN)
