Lagos – The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has voted to establish a new independent body to be known as Association of Paralympic Sports Organisations (APSO).
An online portal, the Insidegames on Wednesday reported that the decision to form the organisation was taken at the IPC General Assembly in Mexico City.
It said that APSO was set up to represent all International Federations which govern sports at the summer and winter Paralympics.
The formation of APSO was in line with such bodies as Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) and the
Association of International Olympic Winter Sports Federations (AIOWF), which are currently in operation.
According to the portal, APSO was expected to play an important role of fostering common interests among members and taking a consensus on IPC issues.
It added that APSO would also help to prepare motions for IPC General Assembly, as well as nominations for key roles.[pro_ad_display_adzone id=”70560″]
The statement further said that the new group would appoint officials to commissions, boards and other organisations.
The body would also provide advice and input to the IPC regarding codes, rules and regulations.
It stated that a working group was established to arrange the first meeting of APSO.
The members of the group include Mark Bullock from the International Tennis Federation, Carole Hicks from World Archery Federation, and Eron Main from the International Wheelchair Rugby Federation.
Other members are Maureen Orchard from the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation and the International Blind Sports Association’s Henk van Aller. (NAN)
