The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has again called for the immediate and unconditional release of its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu, claiming that many of his earlier warnings about Nigeria’s security and political situation have now come true.
In a statement issued by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, the group emphasized that Kanu’s concerns—especially those raised years ago about growing insecurity and political instability—have become evident in the country’s current state. They argued that these developments highlight the need to revisit and restructure Nigeria’s foundation.
Kanu, who has been in custody since his arrest and extradition in 2021, faces charges tied to his advocacy for Biafra’s independence. IPOB insists that events unfolding in the country prove the accuracy of his long-standing warnings.
The group referred to some of Kanu’s past speeches, dating back to 2014, in which he allegedly predicted rising violence and the emergence of armed groups across different regions. According to IPOB, his remarks on insecurity, disunity, and ethnic marginalization have now played out in real time.
“The recent happenings in Nigeria clearly reflect the things Mazi Nnamdi Kanu spoke about years ago. His warnings about insecurity, national disunity, and the neglect of certain ethnic groups are now undeniable,” the statement noted.
IPOB also reiterated its opposition to the forced union that created Nigeria, claiming it remains a root cause of the country’s divisions and underdevelopment. The group once again advocated for peaceful dialogue and a referendum, allowing indigenous communities the right to shape their political futures, just as seen in other democratic nations.
They emphasized that “true solutions must come from peaceful discussions where all ethnic nationalities have a say in their destinies.”
The group further described Kanu’s ongoing detention as unjust and urged the federal government to release him without conditions. It also encouraged political and traditional stakeholders to support meaningful conversations on restructuring the country for fairness and equity.
Concluding the statement, IPOB appealed for unity in tackling Nigeria’s growing security concerns and reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful advocacy and the protection of its people.
